SST Sierra Insurance Brokers located in Murphys, California was originally founded by Michael Schwartz & John Sylvester on October 1, 1979 in Palo Alto, California. Mike & John had been in business with a former firm named Ruddco Insurance, Inc for six years in Palo Alto. They left Ruddco to form Sylvester & Schwartz Insurance with office in Palo Alto, California. They out grew their office space in Palo Alto and moved to Los Altos, California in 1982. Bill Tugaw joined the firm as the Life and Employee Benefits specialist at that point. In 1982 Bill became a partner and the firm name changed to Sylvester, Schwartz & Tugaw Insurance Brokers.
In 1984 Mike moved his family to Murphys, California and commuted to the Los Altos office. As time went on he developed a business presence in the Murphys area. Over a period of two to three years the Murphys business seemed to support an office in Murphys. The name Sylvester, Schwartz & Tugaw was shortened to SST Insurance Brokers in 1995. SST Insurance Brokers opened another branch office in Sonoma, California in 1996. The office grew to around 7 million in premiums. On April 1, 1999 Mike Schwartz & Jeff Rasmussen formed SST Sierra Insurance Brokers and purchased the Murphys office from SST Insurance Brokers. The split has been a friendly one. It came about because of a differing business philosophy of the three offices. SST Sierra Insurance Brokers acquired its own automation system, AMS Prime 2000, the state of the art Windows based system for small to mid-sized agencies. The total volume of SST Sierra Insurance has grown to 1.5 million in volume with aggressive growth plans for the future. SST Sierra Insurance Brokers
